Aces High II Variants

Republic P-47D-11 Thunderbolt
Summary Of The P-47D-11
This variation of the Jug is considered by many to be ďthe dogfighterĒ. It boasts "x8 or x6 .50Cals", and is slightly lighter than the other variants at 13,500lbs. Being lighter, it is slightly more maneuverable than the other "D" series Jugs. It is heavily armored, and can take a decent amount of punishment.

The P-47D-11 Of Aces High II
Model Ratings For The P-47D-11 The D-11 is by far the rarest of the Jugs. It lacks the ability to carry large amounts of ordinance. It is primarily a fighter, and it is quite good at what it does with the right pilot. Do not assume that this is just another easy Jug kill. If you underestimate this machine you will end up in the tower in very short order.

Not quite as powerful as the other Jug models in Aces High II, but it is more maneuverable. It has very low acceleration, and the climb rate is dreadful. However it does retain its energy quite well. The D-11 is a great BnZ fighter. With "x8 .50Cals" even a short snapshot on you can deal massive damage. This Jug also has another surprise. It can turn fight. It can be unforgiving and get away from you when its real slow, but with flaps it stabilize and will turn quite well.

Utilizing The P-47D-11
Generally speaking the D-11 is only going to be used for air-to-air missions. You have two options for fighting in this Jug. You can either stay up high and use your energy retention for booming and zooming, or you can get down and dirty on the deck and slug it out. As with all other Jugs in the game, use your weight. You're much heavier than most other fighters you will come into contact with. This Jug will dive like a rock. If you find yourself in trouble up high simply nose over and head for the deck. You can out dive them and use your superior energy retention to zoom-climb out of trouble, or run for home. If you're confident in your dog-fighting abilities you can use the D-11 as a turn fighter. Remember the Jug can be unforgiving when slow, but using your flaps and a lot of rudder you should stay realtively stable. Simply by dropping your flaps and utilizing the rudder you can turn with or better than a lot of your adversaries when you still have energy, especially if they donít expect you to try and turn with them.

The Jug has very tough armor. Use this to your advantage. You can take an awful lot of punishment before you start to loose valuable parts. This may provide you those extra couple of seconds you need to get an edge on your opponent. This advantage can also be put to use against bombers. You still cannot sit on their tail and wail away at them, but with the heavy armor you can survive that quick snapshot while you BnZ them to death.

The main drawback with the D-11 is a lack of engine power. With a slow top speed on the deck and a poor climb rate it is considered one of the slower fighters in the game. If you find yourself in a turn-fight with the Jug make him loose his E by holding in a sustained turn or merely prolonging the fight. Once you have slowed down, you can level out and easily out run the D-11. The D-11 has very poor acceleration. You should be able to get out of range of its lethal arsenal.

With so many guns on this thing you need to stay away from its nose. Even a short snapshot will do massive damage. Donít try and out-turn it. If a good pilot is behind the stick, and chances are he will be, you will not stand a chance turning with him unless you are in a far superior turner.

Republic P-47D-25 Thunderbolt
Summary Of The P-47D-25
The D-25 boasts slightly more power; however that is made nearly useless by its heavier weight at around 14,500lbs. The D-25 also boasts a bubble canopy which offers excellent visibility. It is slightly less maneuverable compared to other "D" series Jugs, but has better acceleration and an improved climb rate over the D-11.

The P-47D-25 Of Aces High II
Model Ratings For The P-47D-25 Much more common than the D-11, it is still on the rare side. This Jug has an improved ordnance loadout. Still boasting the "x8 .50Cals" that have become a signature of the Jug, this thing is a fighting machine. Used for close air support, hanger busting, and even dogfighting this jug is one of the better ground-attackers.

The D-25 does have better engine performance, but as meantioned earlier that is nearly pointless with the addition of the extra weight of this Jug. Top speed is better than the D-11 but not by much. As with all Jugs performance increases with altitude, and with less weight put on the aircraft. Taking the light gun-package "x6.50Cals", and lighter fuel load with drop tanks can make the D-25 a competitive fighter.

Utilizing The P-47D-25
The D-25 is well adapted for many missions. Able to carry 2,500lbs of ordinance and "x6 M8 rockets" you can take down a hanger, town, or a few vehicles. However it is the D-25's main armament that is deadly featuring an array of .50Calís. Just like the D-11 you should use the Jugs superior diving to gain the edge on your opponent, or get away quickly. Also just like the D-11 this jug can turn well for a heavy aircraft. The large flaps and dive breaks on the D-25 can slow you down very quickly and cause your opponent to overshoot. With the increased acceleration of the D-25 you can get right back on his tail.

The D-25 also boasts excellent armor and should be used against bombers in BnZ style attacks. Jugs are not exactly the best bomber hunter, especially against heavily armored bombers such as B-17ís and B-24ís.

Although better acceleration and climb-rate than the D-11 the D-25 still falls short. The best way to get away from the D-25 is to out-run or out-climb it. If you know what you are doing and are careful you can out turn it. The D-25 also seems to have a nasty habit of either catching on fire, or having the tail fall off.

Republic P-47D-40 Thunderbolt
Summary Of The P-47D-40
The D-40 features a more powerful engine making it the fastest of the "D" series Jugs. The D-40 has better climb, speed, and supposedly better maneuverability over the D-25. (Some still dispute the maneuverability claim.)

The P-47D-40 Of Aces High II
Model Ratings For The P-47D-40 The D-40 offers the ability to carry more ordinance than the rest of the "D" series models. The D-40 is a very good dive-bomber, with excellent handling at high speeds. The improved power really helps to alleviate some of the growing pains the "D" series Jugs have had.

With improved engine performance top speed, climb rate, and acceleration is better in the D-40. The D-40 can also be the most maneuverable of the "D" series when loaded properly. When configured strictly as a fighter, "no ords, light fuel load, and light gun package", it is a formidable foe, especially with altitude and energy.

Utilizing The P-47D-40
As with all the other Jugs gravity is your friend. If you are not comfortable with turn-fighting the D-40 makes an excellent BnZ fighter. Keep your speed high and nothing will be able to touch you. If you feel like jumping into the thick of things FLAPS ARE YOUR FRIENDS. The quick and dirty rule for turn-fighting in Jugs is this. If you are in any turn that requires you to pull your joystick back more than 50% of its full travel you should be using flaps.

With the improved engine performance the old ways of out flying a Jug are not as effective with the D-40. However the Jugs still have their one fatal flaw, their weight. Use this to your advantage and take the fight into the vertical using sharp zoom-climbs. If a Jug is low on energy it wonít last long. Often times you can hammer right above him and end up on his 6.

Republic P-47M Thunderbolt
Summary Of The P-47M
Unlike all other jugs the "M" was built to be a fighter. Very maneuverable and very fast was the order of the day when the "M" was built. Considered one of the best fighters in the game, the "M" is formiddable.

The P-47M Of Aces High II
Model Ratings For The P-47M At altitude, easily one of the most dangerous. Fast, maneuverable, good range, and handles better at high alts than nearly any other aircraft. Highly recommended as a high-altitude escort.

With a powerful engine, somewhat light-weight design for a Jug and large control surfaces thisJug is built for air-superiority. Still a Jug at heart with a massive airframe, heavy armor, "x8 .50Cals" with more ammo than you can imagine, it is hardly worthy of being called a Jug. This P-47 was built to mix it with the Luftwaffe, not the ground forces. It doesnít offer any ordinance but instead enjoys the ability to carry a large amount of external fuel to take you on a nice trip around the world.

Utilizing The P-47M
This Jug can be used for any type of dog-fighting you like. BnZ from high altitudes or turning with most fighters on the deck. With large flaps and a powerful engine it can turn with just about any fighter you come across. The heavy armor will also take a good amount of punishment. This Jug also features dive flaps which is interesting because it was not designed to be a dive bomber. Use these to your advantage if you have an enemy on your six to cause a overshoot. You can almost stop this Jug on the spot and then jump right back on his six with your superior engine power.

Your best chance at getting away from this Jug is to use wingman tactics to get him turning with more than one of you at once. While being an excellent turn-fighter, it is very hard to turn the other way after you've commited to a tight turn. And again like all the other Jugs, its heavy so taking the fight vertical may be your only chance. However only use this as a last ditch effort to get away. Those "x8 .50Cals" can really do a number on you if it gets a quick shot off.

Republic P-47N Thunderbolt
Summary Of The P-47D-N
The N is said to be the ultimate Jug. Able to carry a lot of ords over a long distance and then become a very good fighter, it is the ultimate swing-role fighter

The P-47N Of Aces High II
Model Ratings For The P-47N This is probably the most popular Jug in the game because it can be used for both ground-attack and fighter suppression. With a lot of fuel and a lot of power it is also a very good escort aircraft.

With a top speed of over 400 mph at altitude it is one of the fastest non perked planes in the game. Excellent endurance mixed with the power and maneuverability we have come to expect from the Jug family, lead to a very capable plane for any mission.

Utilizing The P-47N
The N is used just like all the other jugs in the game. Use its superior diving ability to get away from enemy fighters. If that fails drop the flaps and turn with them. They will either realize they cannot win and run away, or be foolish to try and turn with you. Keep you energy up at all times and you will be hard to beat in this Jug.

As with all the other Jugs its roll-rate isnít that good when it is slow, even with flaps. You may be able to switch direction fast enough to get away. And again if all else fails take it into the vertical. But be careful of those guns. Remember that after you both stall out he will drop away from you much faster than you expect because of its heavier weight. You will only have a short amount of time to get a shot off before its out of optimal range.
